Got
Some Pressing Decisions?
One helpful and biblical approach to making decisions is recognizing the role of counselors. That is, what do other mature Christians think about
our decision? What advice can they give? Mature Christians who love the Lord, know the Word of
God, and who are living spiritual lives are important for helping us determine
God’s will (Rom. 15:14; Col. 3:16; 2 Pet. 1:5-8). These dear folks are
qualified to afford us sound advice from a Bible-informed perspective. This is
partly why we must never forsake the assembling of ourselves together with other
Christians (Heb. 10:24-25). Remember, New Testament churches are central to God’s
economy today by His design. Quite often through the functioning body of Christ
we learn what His will is for our lives. Again this is part of Christ’s design
for this age.
What other people think—even mature Christians—is not as
important as our personal knowledge of Scripture. We must be strongly inclined
to secure and sense God’s guidance as we research the Word for ourselves. In
addition it is also important to keep in mind that mature counselors cannot
make decisions for us where the Scriptures are silent. However, there is safety
in a “multitude of counselors” (Prov. 11:14). We are less likely to make
decisions we will regret if we invite others to help us and check our
objectivity. Yes, all of this requires a generous measure of humility! Corporate
wisdom from godly people is significant in God’s scheme of things (Eph. 4:16).
Be sure to consult with other mature Believers especially when making the weightier
decisions.
