The Worst Kind of Predators

2 Peter 2
If there was ever any question about how early Christian leaders felt about false teachers and their doctrines, the answer is found here.  Just as knowledge of the truth is the friend of spiritual life and growth, error and heresy are the death of the same. God does not call upon believers to embrace these false teachers as brethren, but to identify and point them out as dangerous. Peter tells us something about the punishment, character, and techniques of false teachers and thus he safeguards true believers from their deceptions. Such false ministers are the worst kind of predators. Just as a tiger aggressively hunts its prey, these religious hunters stalk and pursue the souls of the unsuspecting….
First, the false teachers gather among true believers and they place their erroneous teachings right alongside truth trying to pass them off as legitimate.  This they do secretly to avoid exposure.  One of the principle heresies they pander is a denial of the Lordship of Jesus Christ who redeemed all men with His own blood.  They are also very successful in their endeavors because “many shall follow their pernicious ways” and as a result the true way of righteousness has been and will be scandalized and discredited. Yes, they are not only effective hunters of men, but they are extremely successful predators who pollute the souls of those who do not follow them. One consequence is the unsaved individual rejects real Christianity along with these religious fakes. They believe the false churches, false teachers, fake preachers and false books are actual representatives of the real Christian Faith. Beloved, nothing could be farther from the truth! These are wolves and real Christians are sheep.
What motivates these religious impostors?  Covetousness manifested by an extreme form of greed for money, and inordinate cravings of the fallen nature of men. They use their ‘teaching ministries’ to make a lucrative business of religion.  They constantly appeal to saints and sinners alike for money, offerings, contributions, and support. They are not ashamed of asking others to sacrifice or ‘sow some seeds’ while they live in absolute ridiculous wealth. They seem to attract followers by using high-sounding words filled with no meaning at all. Examine their teachings closely comparing them carefully to the Scriptures and you will see what I mean. They are saying nothing of any real consequence! Much like their claims of spiritual attainment, their messages are without reality—hypocrites.
The judgment of these error panderers is certain as stated throughout this section of Scripture (2 Peter 2).  In fact, God’s punishment against such liars is “swift destruction.” In addition, God says their punishment will not be delayed nor is it asleep.  He will not spare, but deal with them mercilessly and thoroughly as He did before with the angels who sinned and rebelled against Him. They were cast directly down to the dark dungeons of hell for incarceration until the day they will be belched out into the lake of fire. While God’s judgment of these fakes may not be immediate, it is nevertheless certain. Do not desire nor follow their ways.
Another example of how fiercely and pitilessly Jehovah will penalize the truth offenders can be seen in his total condemnation of the entire world except Noah and his family. Remember, God did indeed judge the whole planet with a worldwide flood! This same righteous judgment of God was echoed in the days of Abraham when Sodom and Gomorrah were roundly condemned in punitive fires of retribution. In this instance God targeted specific cities and dealt with them according to their sins. Beloved, God can judge with flood, fire, and anything else He deems appropriate. God knows how to overthrow the wicked and these past episodes serve as warnings to the ungodly of all ages. These examples also assure real believers that a just and righteous God will deal with these false teachers of our time.
God is equally skilled in delivering the tempted believer and suffering saint out of the very midst of devastating judgment.  He did so with Noah and with Lot and He will do so for the believer grieved with the sight and pervasive decadence of sin in the world.  Believers will not have to endure always with the general cultural climate of the world, nor be vexed with the lies and lifestyles of false teachers. Righteousness will be vindicated in God’s perfect timing; we do not need to worry about whether He will do this.
But how can a believer identify a false teacher?  What is typical of their errors?  Peter tells us they are carnal, unclean, rebellious, presumptuous, self-willed, and proud. Fake preachers and deceivers make much of prosperity and “blessings” in this life and world. They portray immediate benefits and gratification as the most desirable prospect. They are enslaved to their passions, corrupt to their core, rejecters of officials and authorities, arrogant and slanderous. They promote personal advantage and self-fulfillment as the truly worthwhile endeavors. As such, they are like wild animals fit for the slaughter—godless predators.  They are men and women who will perish in the corruption they orchestrated. They can rightly anticipate “the reward of unrighteousness.”
Peter tells us again of these error teachers intimate associations with the churches of the Lord. They have not only invaded good churches, but they have started their own religious organizations. Either way they are still considered “Christian” by the public and non-discerning believers. These living contradictions appeared at the fellowships and feasts of the believers.  Perhaps even at the communion table of our Lord Jesus.  Yet, they were entrenched habitual sinners whose hearts were highly trained in the craft of covetousness. These greedy deceivers along with those who follow them wish to “use” the Christian Faith to advance their businesses, secure material wealth, achieve fame and success, or sell their poisons and snake oil to the unsuspecting and naive.  They are fit to be cursed and separated from God forever.
Like Balaam money, fame and sex compelled them in their madness.  This affords us insight into their tricks of the trade or their techniques for gathering a following. Money, prosperity, wealth, extravagance, power, and success are terms and ideas they value highly. Sexual perversions of all kinds tend to characterize these assemblies and organizations. Anything from multiple wives, adulteries-wife sharing, preying on children--pedophiles, sex outside of marriage, homosexual behaviors to forbidding marriage for their priests are practiced, endorsed and encouraged. Some groups emphasize unharnessed self-indulgence and others on the opposite end of the spectrum promote extreme asceticism. While they made enticing promises, they themselves are completely void of any real hope. They take ‘giving people what they want’ to an entirely new level. In other movements abstinence from certain foods, days, and even marriage are regarded as keys to devotion or salvation itself. When they appealed to people’s fallen lower cravings with the guarantee of liberty, they themselves were enslaved in hard bondage to vices. They were and are altogether overcome with damning corruptions.
Their followers eventually experienced great disappointment, frustration, greater bondage, and disillusionment. Even though they use the Bible to support their teachings and claims, the “promises” they propagate do not come true. These false teachers seemed to prey on the ‘seekers’—those inquiring of Christ and beginning to investigate the gospel.  Some of these victims have made some decent reforms under the influence of Christianity, but have not yet trusted Christ as Lord and Savior.  But, they became entangled and overcome by the lies of the false teachers.  As a result, their end is far worst then their beginning.  They now are aware of the gospel, but have fallen prey to deceptions. Their guilt before God is compounded.  These people who had ‘cleaned up their acts’ have returned to the same lifestyle the sin nature dominates.  Much like wild dogs and hogs.  They simply follow their natural inclinations—devouring and wallowing in filth and sin.
As you can see God says nothing good about these religious predators! I personally believe a special miracle from God is required to deliver people from these poisons and movements. Beloved, do not be fooled by these smooth talking tale tellers. What they promise always sounds too good to be true. This is because their teachings are not true. Just because they are popular, are selling books, appear on television, and have a spot on the Christian radio station does not mean they are God’s servants. Do not be fooled by their ‘success’, the size of their churches, their impressive material wealth, the number of academic degrees they possess, incredible worship centers, beauty of their cathedrals, or mega-church status! The size of a church's or a movement's following does not in anyway serve as an indication that God is involved in that movement. The New Testament is still reliable as the primary source for guidance on the Christian Faith. Also, there are still very good churches and pastors who seek to honor God, the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit above all else. Typically, they rely on the Scriptures, preach Christ crucified, buried, risen and coming again.  The Bible is their final authority and their mission is to take the Gospel of Peace to the entire world. True Bible teachers and preachers believe that salvation is by grace and through faith without any human efforts to earn acceptance by God. Like the Lord Jesus, they willingly sacrifice greatly to share Christ and the Gospel with the world who needs Him. Beloved, please take this warning to heart to stay away from the worst kind of predators.

Keep Your Focus on Jesus

Jesus made a tremendous claim about Himself in John 14:6 when He said: “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.”
Who is the One who makes such a claim about Himself? How does this claim impact a person's faith? If a person truly believes this claim made by Jesus, how does their belief change the way they live? Those are important questions for every Christian to answer.
Countless people in our world refute this claim made by Jesus, saying, “There are many paths to God. There are many religions, but as long as they all point in the same direction, they are to a great extent equal.”
Others are indignant at His claim, saying in effect, “How dare He think He is the only way to the Father.”  Still others try to discredit the claim of the Lord Jesus, saying that He didn't really mean what is written or that He didn't really say what John wrote.
Genuine Christian believers through the ages; however, have staked their lives on this claim that Jesus made about Himself.

PAUL ATTACKED THE FALSE IDEAS ABOUT CHRIST HEAD ON!

Col. 2:8, Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
First Century Attacks on Christ’s Deity and All Sufficiency.
The Book of Colossians is Paul’s Answer. The apostle Paul wrote the book of Colossians to counter the arguments that were being circulated by a number of false teachers who claimed that Jesus was a good man but that belief in Him was not required or sufficient for salvation.
The Cults and False Teachings Were Not Necessary.  These were teachers who advocated that other doctrines and cults had their place as equals to Christianity.
False Teachers Perverted Teachings on Christ’s Person and Sacrificial Death.
Col. 2:4-5, And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words. [5] For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Christ.
In response to these false teachers, Paul began declaring that they should not let anyone delude them. Don't be misled by these false teachers! As you read these verses of warning from Paul, consider what it means to be deceived or “cheated” by those who give false instruction.
Paul Fought The False Teachers By Declaring the Facts About Christ.
Col. 2:2-4,  That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; [3] In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. [4] And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words.
Paul further responded to these false teachers by presenting two main arguments, both of which will be examined in closer detail in the first portion of this study:
Paul Proclaimed the Truth about Christ’s Deity. The false teachers have a wrong understanding about the deity of Jesus Christ. They do not understand that He truly was God incarnate, or God “in flesh.”
Paul Proclaimed the Truth about Christ’s Death. The false teachers have a wrong understanding about the blood of Jesus Christ and what His death on the cross really meant. They do not understand the atonement that was made by Jesus Christ for the sins of all mankind.
According to Col 1:14, We Have Some Beautiful Benefits Through Jesus Christ.  Paul lists five benefits God gives all believers through Christ:
1.  He made us qualified to share in his inheritance.
2.  He rescued us from Satan's dominion of darkness and made us his children.
3.  He brought us into his eternal kingdom.
4.  He redeemed us -- bought our freedom from sin and judgment.
5.  He forgave us for all our sins.
Thank God for what you have received in Christ.(Stanley & MacArthur)

PAUL PROCLAIMED THE FACTS ABOUT WHO JESUS CHRIST REALLY IS.

It is Impossible To Fully Understand God.
Remember God is Incomprehensible. Certainly it is not fully possible for any of us, in our finite human state, to comprehend the fullness of our infinite God. None of us are fully capable of comprehending the glory of the Trinity or the majesty of Jesus Christ.
Job 11:7, Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?
Isaiah 40:18, To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto him?
Remember God Can Be Known.
John 17:3, And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
1 John 5:20,  And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true [God our Heavenly Father], and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
To a certain extent, all that we know about God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit are things that we know in part. As Paul wrote to the Corinthians, “For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.” (1 Cor. 13:12).
It is Possible to Understand God through Christ’s Revelation of Him!
John 14:7, If ye had known me [Jesus Christ], ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
Even so, there are some truths that we can know with certainty about God because Jesus Christ made those things very plain to us and explained them not only in words but by the actions of his life.
Commitment to Christ-Centered Insight Leads to More Understanding (Col. 2:2-3).
Christ Centered Insight into God’s Ways Enables Believers to Know Truth More Fully. Paul did not want any believers to stop at knowing the glorious riches of his mystery (Col.1:27), he wanted them to have the full riches of complete understanding.
Christ Is the True Mystery of God (Vs. 2). Christ is the revealer of God to man.  There is no understanding of God apart from Christ. There is no complete understanding of God apart from a personal relationship with his Son.
A Mystery is Understandable by Believers. A Mystery is a truth concealed in the OT period and now reveal in the NT period.Christ in effect has unveiled God for us to know Him. Christ is the mystery, yet he is a mystery revealed to those who believe -- as is the mystery of "Christ in you, the hope of glory" (Col.1:27), and the mystery that Gentiles and Jews can be united in one body (Col.1:26).
John 1:18, No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
Hebrews 1:2-3, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; [3] Who being the brightness of his glory [All Divine Perfections], and the express image of his person [Exact Representative of God], and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
All spiritual knowledge, understanding, and wisdom is in Christ! The force of this passage, Col. 2:2-3, is that all, and not merely some of the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are contained in Christ; therefore, to search for them outside of Him is doomed to failure. But not only are they in Christ, but they are contained in a hidden way.  Thus complete understanding obtained through a personal relationship with Christ himself assures believers of the truth and helps them recognize and avoid heresy. Everything anyone wants to know about God and his purposes in the world are answered in the person of Christ. The mystery is revealed because it is Christ in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. (MacDonald)
We can secure these deep riches through the discipline of meditation.  These “hid” “treasures” do not lie on the surface, but must be sought for earnestly, as men seek for hidden treasure.  Dig then beloved, into the richest vein in the universe, dig even deeper to find what you are longing for! These are not matters of external observances, such as the false teachers believed, but they can be secured only by deep and serious meditation on the truths of Christ.
Hidden does not mean concealed, but rather that they were laid up or stored away to be made available to those who desire a deepening relationship with Christ.  Fellowship with through meditation is one key to open the door to access these hid treasures.  Certainly these words are a great comfort to us who do not have to look any farther for wisdom and knowledge than to our Savior, Jesus Christ. As believers we are already possessed of all wisdom and knowledge, yet we have a long way to go to attain maturity and complete understanding.  Meditation upon specific truths about Christ is the key to securing these treasures and faith in application of the truth to our need is the key to enjoying the treasure. (MacArthur)
Psalm 1:2, But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
1 Tim. 4:15, Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.

Christ is the Only Rich Gold Mine of Spiritual Insights (Vs. 3). For in Him are hidden (Col. 1:26) all the treasures of wisdom (Col. 1:9) and knowledge.”
Knowledge Is the Apprehension of Truth. (What We Need to Know)
Knowledge is prudent judgment. Knowledge is often described as good judgment. True knowledge is found only in Christ.
Wisdom Is Truths Application to Life. (How We Need to Live)
Wisdom is prudent action.  Wisdom is application of good judgment in the form of good actions. True wisdom is found only in Christ.
Faithfully look to Christ for the answers and solutions you yearn for.  Both “knowledge” (what I need to Know) and “wisdom” (what I need to do) are found in Christ (Rom. 11:33; 1 Cor. 12:8) whose wisdom is foolishness to the world (1 Cor. 1:21-25), but who is the power of God by which a believer receives “righteousness, sanctification, and redemption” (1 Cor. 1:30).  Certainly this encompasses all areas of life and nothing is left wanting or unsatisfied.  It is imperative that we faithfully look to Christ with every need, concern, or cry for help.
Commit yourself to the truth in Jesus Christ the Lord. As believers, we all need to grow to maturity in the faith we have received. Paul reaffirmed this to them in 2:1-3 so that we would not be deceived by any arguments from false teachers. The false teachers had their fascinating philosophies, but in Christ we have “all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (v. 3). Any man-made philosophy that has no place for Christ is unworthy of our consideration. We are rich in Him; why lower ourselves to follow man-made doctrines? Let religious teachers come along with their “hidden doctrines”; we have all wisdom hidden in Christ, and we are “hid with Christ in God” (3:3).  At first, lies don't sound like lies. The false teachers did a good job of making their teachings sound plausible and of using persuasive tactics to cause the believers to question their faith. When believers are fully committed to the truth in Jesus, they will not be easily deluded when others offer "treasures of wisdom" not found in Christ. (Stanley & MacArthur)
If we have a more complete understanding of who Jesus Christ is then we can appreciate His complete ability to provide for us– his all sufficiency is rooted in His divine nature and power. This then is the solid foundation on which we grow and develop in every area of our lives.
The fact is, if we do not fully know Christ Jesus, we cannot know his sufficiency. And if we do not believe that He is sufficient, and have an ability to access His sufficiency, we are vulnerable to arguments that can lead us astray—away from Christ and away from the perfection to which Christ calls us. (Anders)
On the other hand, if we have a deep understanding of all that Christ has provided for us and all that He makes available to us, we have a solid foundation on which to grow and develop in every area of our lives. A solid foundation, one established on the eternal principles of God's Word, must become our desire if we truly are to live meaningful, satisfying, and victorious lives!

Can I Really Know God?

The short answer is God can indeed be known by us! Yes, it is true that we cannot know everything about God, but it is equally true that we can know Him, obey Him, and fulfill His great plan for our lives.
Actually, the Great God of the Bible Desires to Be Known by Us!
This truth is mentioned in several places in the Bible with striking clarity and significance. Consider what God said through his prophet Jeremiah in 24:7, “And I will give them an heart to know me, that I am the Lord: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God: for they shall return unto me with their whole heart.” When God saves us, he gives us a heart to know Him! Such knowledge is to lead to a deepening relationship with him and a more complete devotion to him.
Consider God’s call of Moses and how He revealed himself to the nation of Israel while they were in captivity in Egypt. In Exodus 3:4, we see the great Communicator in action, “And when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.” Obviously God is taking the initiative to reveal Himself to Moses through this extraordinary miracle! Then a little later in Exodus 3:13-14, God reveals one of His names to Moses for the benefit of Israel, “And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them? [14] And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.” God takes up the cause to disclose truths about Himself to Moses and Moses is to communicate that to others.
God reveals himself as the only true God. The Egyptians had many gods by many different names. Moses wanted to know God’s name so the Hebrew people would know exactly who had sent him to them. God called himself “I Am”, a name describing his eternal power and unchangeable character.
In a world where values, morals, and laws change constantly, we can find stability and security in our unchanging God. The God who appeared to Moses is the same God who can live in believers today. Hebrews 13:8, says God is the same “yesterday, today, and forever.” Because God’s nature is stable He is trustworthy; we are free to follow and enjoy him rather than spend our time trying to figure him out.
The great desire in the heart of our Lord Jesus Christ for all his disciples is that we might KNOW GOD! In fact, this is the very definition of eternal life—knowing God through faith in Jesus Christ. John records the prayer of the Lord Jesus in John 17:3, stating “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” This same truth was echoed by the Apostle John later in 1 John 5:20, “And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.” Eternal life is a faith-relationship through Jesus Christ, the Son of God. It is through Christ that we enter a relationship with God (Jn. 14), and Christ is the revelation of God. It is the Lord Jesus who has “given us and understanding” enabling us to know God. How about you? Do you know God through Christ?
The Source of The Knowledge of God Must be the Scriptures.
Since Christ Jesus is the Way, Truth, and Life, think on what he says about the ability and role of the Word of God to reveal God. Consider John 5:39, where our Lord challenged religious people to Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.” The Scriptures proclaim Jesus Christ! Any honest research of the Bible will bring us to the conclusion that the Bible is a “Jesus Book.” Accordingly, a person can be a “Bible scholar” and still miss the real message and primary Person of the Scriptures—Jesus Christ! Many people today use the Bible, quote the Scriptures, and point to proof texts to support their belief system. The problem in too many instances is they have gross misconceptions about God because they miss the centrality of Jesus in the Bible’s message. While they have embraced certain truths and concepts, they remain blind to the knowledge of God because they have not yet perceived the significance of Christ Jesus to understanding God! Honest Scripture research will bring us face to face with the testimony of the Lord Jesus. Beloved, the Bible is the source of the true knowledge of God.
Then in Hebrews 1:1-2, we find this important affirmation, “God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, [2] Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds”. God has communicated to humanity in many different ways throughout Bible history. He even spoke through a donkey to a thick-head prophet! Today; however, he is communicating through the Son of God. The Lord Jesus is God’s final world to humanity and that essential message is recorded, explained, and revealed in the body of the New Testament. God is still reaching out to humanity through Christ Jesus as recorded in the Scriptures.
God is Communicating Through Scripture Today!
His desire to communicate to us in diverse ways is an activity of God that should lead us to appreciate Him more. This is amplified since due to our sinful condition He is not obligated to tell us anything at all. Today he is speaking through the Word of God!
God Clearly Condemns Divination —the attempt to discern God’s message through such things as the pattern of tea leaves or the position of the stars. God does not speak to us through astrology or fortune-tellers. The Bible calls these practices abominations to God.
God Does Not Speak to His People Through Occult Practices. His Word speaks strongly against conjuring spirits—such as séances—and any form of magic that might attempt to give us direction for our lives. Soothsayers and seers were among the people that God clearly told his children to avoid.
We are to stay far away from such things as tarot cards, Ouija boards, crystals, magic charms, and other such paraphernalia associated with the occult. They are not methods that God has used in the past, is using today, or will ever use.  We need to know the Scriptures, for without them we are headed for error. Consider the warning of the Lord Jesus Christ in Matthew 22:29, “Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.”
Let each of us take Christ’s sober warning to heart. We are prone to err and destined to make huge mistakes in beliefs and judgment if we are ignorant of the Bible. My soul trembles every time I hear someone assert, “I believe what I believe, and that is all that matters.” While they claim to know what they believe, they do not know why they believe it! They may claim the Bible says it, but does the Bible actually teach their ideas? Honestly, they do not know what they do not know! They are trapped and imprisoned by their misconceptions and false ideas. It is painful for me to witness this; yet I am confronted with it too often. When I attempt to show them what the Scriptures actually say and teach, they refuse it clinging to their fables, myths, half-truths, traditions, and misconceptions. They have been fooled by the devil and poisoned by untrue ideas. Beloved, this is an incredibly dangerous predicament in which to live. I definitely would not want to die believing these errors! Biblical ignorance is deadly, and could be eternally damning!
So, to answer the question, “Can I really know God?” the answer is yes! Wonderfully and absolutely YES! The greatest Communicator of all time and eternity has spoken to reveal Himself in the Bible. To know him, read, study, meditate on, and research the most reliable source of spiritual information in the entire universe, the Bible.  To discover the greatest reality of all time and eternity, start reading in the Gospel of John in the New Testament. Read through this single book several times back-to-back. You will find there the historical record of God living among people as a man for the purpose of revealing God to them. You will also find that those who trusted Jesus Christ as Savior entered into an eternal relationship with True God. Yes, the True and Living God is revealed in the Bible and through his Son Jesus Christ. I encourage you to journey on in the knowledge of Him. I challenge you to venture on believing the Word of God in order to grow in your knowledge and experience of Him. You can know God profoundly and deeply!
